-
More than 80% of under 18’s in India do not go to school and may be forced into child labour.

-
Their Route to Freedom is Education
-
Robins Nest: A Slum School Project Agra, India
-
Our aim is to support Robins Nest Slum School Project by giving them the skills and resources they need to expand and educate children living below the poverty line in the slums of Agra.
-
Many people visit Agra to see The Taj Mahal, however hidden away in what is called a “slum area” is somewhere more inspiring than a majestic building. We discovered Robins Nest when visiting India to source ethically donated hair to be used for cancer patients. We wanted to find a deserving charity project that could empower individuals. Orphaned children, living below the poverty line, with no hope of a future without help was the most obvious one.
-
Our long term aim is to donate a percentage of sales to help this project, in recognition that the hair is donated in India.
-
We have also created the tools they need to campaign for themselves by sharing our time and skills to create this website and Facebook page Robins Nest can connect to the rest of the world.
-
It is not just about raising money but a unique opportunity for you to engage with these children. Read their biographies and stories. It is a two-way education. Learn about Indian slum life as an orphan and their challenges. What are their dreams and aspirations?
-
What is their life in the village like and their progress at the school. Share any knowledge, skills, stories, photos feedback and ideas with them too.
-
If you get an opportunity to visit The Taj Mahal visit the school and orphanage they will make you feel very welcome and inspired
-
ABOUT SLUM VILLAGES & ROBIN’S NEST
-
Despite the economic growth in India – In Delhi, the number of poor below the poverty line has nearly doubled in just over five years from 1.2 million in 1999/00 to 2.3 million in 2004/05 (Government of Delhi, 2008). The 2001 Census provisionally showed that the slum population in Delhi was approximately 1.9 million, which is around 22% of the total population (Government of Delhi, 2006).
-
There is a crucial part of India slums that is both sad and tough for parents to go through. Adults and families all over do not have what they need to support their children with, and many children and infants are dying. Children that do not die in the slums have to go through pretty much hell every day in piles and piles of garbage. Conditions in the slums are not satisfactory to human needs and cannot be tolerated, parents need help and children need to stop dying.
-
Considering the above, what Robin’s Nest has already achieved, without any external funding, is all the more remarkable. It was created by Mr.Harry Singh (senior), who was a slum orphan himself as a teenager. He decided not just to help himself but to try and help others by providing shelter, care and education. There are 12 orphans at Robin’s Nest. They are hoping to open a slum school that can take not just their orphans but 50 children who are unable to go to school because they are below the poverty line, orphans or semi-orphans. Girls are equally encouraged to attend and have the same equal opportunities as boys in education, which is not always the case.
-
The school is located in the rural area of a village Rewati Ka Nagla, Malpura, District – Agra State- U.P. (India). Close to The Taj Mahal
-
“Our primary goal is to develop the children in the field of education, practical skills, training programmes, art and creativity and also the principles of orphan care, which can be passed down to a new generation. Primary education is a need of all children but many children in India can’t go to school because of poverty. More than 50% of village slum people cannot send their children to school because of poverty.
-
Through this campaign we can reach out to these children’s families with new hope and new light in their dark life. Our aim is to reach the unreached.”
-
Project Manager & Director Joseph Singh

-
Donate your time, skills, books, children’s clothes or money.
-
This campaign is:
-
Small and manageable. More personal than a large organisation. You can get to know a few or all of the children.
-
No expensive overheads or salaries in the UK. We work for nothing to help Robins Nest become self-managed via social media campaigning. If you have spare time and would like to be more involved with this project – share your skills.
-
Donated Books, clothes, stationary etc are taken to Delhi for free by British Airways crew. If we receive more than we need they will be diverted to other orphanages worldwide. This is extremely cost effective and will help lower the cost of the school set up and sustainability.
-
To open the school Robins Nest needs a total of £1,350
-
This includes books, school uniform, furniture and the building.
-
The monthly cost for 50 children to attend school is £224
-
This includes teachers and building maintenance.
-
We have a 30 day campaign to raise enough to open, renovate and sustain for six months Donate Here: https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/slumschoolproject
-
We need to raise:
-
Year 1 £4230
-
Year 2 £3000
-
Year 3 £3000
-
REGISTER HERE if you would like to get involved.
-
share your skills
-
This exciting project is launched today June 15th 2015. The aim is to firstly ensure the existing children in Robin’s nest have the essentials to live. The next step is to assist Harry and Joseph Singh the founders to open a school for children who are below the poverty line in India. They have a site sourced and aim to open a school for 50 children who would otherwise have no future. We are not a charity just individuals who are happy to share our skills for nothing to raise awareness and money to make the school a reality.
-
If you have a few hours a week spare it would be great if you could be involved by writing, sharing and promoting this project by social media.
-
Collect needed items such as books and clothes that can be sent from Heathrow airport to the orphanage.
-
Take part in fundraising events to help the campaign.
-
Link up with a school so UK children can actively engage with these children. Share stories and photos and maybe one day meet up.
-
Share your ideas. What do you think would help Robins Nest and the slum school orphanage to self sustain?
-
CONTACT US
-
You can email us on info@slumschoolproject.org
